Self Portrait Running

Running Self Portrait 1978 Watercolour 9”x 11′

After leaving Canterbury College of Art (now UCA and previously KIAD) I moved to London to try my luck at getting commissions for magazines, record sleeves, advertising etc.

I joined Ian Fleming and Associates initially as a studio artist and after six months they offered to represent me. It was a lucky break and Chris Neville initially nurtured my fledging career.
I made this Portrait of John Cleese in 1978 and it  was used on Ian Fleming’s Creative Handbook page and was also published in Illustrators 21, the New York Society of Illustrators Annual 1979. This scan is from that annual and I’m attempting to get a scan fom the original which I have tracked down. The idea was to show a possible editorial piece of the type that many magazines used at one time, not so much now. Imagine an interview with John Cleese titled ‘Is the Python on the Horizon for Cleese’.
